    Hi Alison,

If I'm making a batch of pies or crumbles I use the peelings to make apple jelly.

This thread has more ideas for using them:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

Feed it to the chooks who turn it into eggs :)

I leave the skin on for chutney and C-word pudding, and for baked apples (which I then eat, but the rest of my family leaves ;) ).

You can boil up apple skins to make a pectin-rich jelly to help set low-pectin jams and jellies.

OMG I was :eek::eek: at C Word Pudding too and might never get over it :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    Thanks for explanation LOL

Typical! I look everywhere for thread that was appropriate and it was hidden under apple peelings. :rotfl:

We recently had a big batch of apples to deal with and they had to be used up so we cooked some and froze it down as apple sauce and stewed apples, then made the rest into two different flavours of chutney. We had a mountain of apple cores and peelings and were going to put them in the food recycling box then had a bright idea. As the skin and core is the main source of pectin they might make a jelly. We put them in a pan and boiled them in water until they were pulpy then strained the lot through a jelly bag. We used the liquid for an apple jelly recipe, added dried mint and ended up with 6 jars of the most delicious mint jelly to go with lamb - for the cost of the sugar!

That's a brilliant idea I love mint jelly. Must try it when I get the opportunity. Great tip.

I should have mentioned you can also flavour it with sage, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, lemon, anything you like once you have the basic jelly! Yum!!
