Ideas for apple peelings

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for what I can do with apple peelings?

I have just made several lovely apple and cinnamon tarts, and I have peeled 12 apples, leaving a huge pile of peelings, and wondered if there was anything I could cook with them instead of just binning them (no I don't compost, I don't have a garden to stick a compost bin in)

Shred them, mix in ground cinnamon and ground cloves, form into balls with your hands, squeezing out as much liquid as possible. Put on waxed paper and leave to dry completely, rotating daily to prevent mould, and voila - an ingredient for pot pourri.
  • I had a friend who used to boil these together with the cores to make a kind of apple drink. Have to admit that mine go in the compost.

  • Wouldn't do this with non-organic apples but had some lovely organic cooking apples from the farmers market. Peeled and chopped them to make stewed apple and raisins, and couldn't bear to throw out the peel and cores (Waste not, want not!!)

So.........boiled the peel and cores for 10 mins in a pan, drained the juice and chilled it.

Result? Some lovely fresh apple juice!
  • Yes I used to do that years ago when my children were very small.

Hope this helps. I haven't tried it yet, but plan to. So good to see something made from waste food!

    Best wishes
