Can I ask another question? I have a 475MHz AMD K6-2 3D processor that has and is working fine but every time I look at hardware (dvd writer for instance) I can't buy it because it has a spec requiring 800MHz or more. I looked at a web site selling processors and there is a range of AMD processors from £20.00 to £479.00. I would have no problem changing the processor, I’ve had to take the cooling fan out and clean it before now. But how do I choose a new processor? I presume one can't just plug in any new processor into an old computer. What do I need to know about my old processor and the new one to make sure it is compatible? I asked AMD but they just sent me a meaningless (to me) standard response. Obviously as a moneysavingexpert reader I would prefer to buy the £20.00 one which is 1.37GHz among other things.

    Thanks

K6-2's are obsolete now. I think the highest model available for the k6-2 was a 500Mhz K6-2.

It wouldn't be a case of just swapping the processor as the sockets are different. You would need to change the motherboard and possibly the PSU, graphics card and memory as well.

My DVD writer (NEC2500A 8x+/-) uses Ultra DMA Mode 2 aka UDMA33 whiuch your board should support. In theory I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work as a writer in your machine.

If you intend doing any video editing or re-coding you would really need to upgrade your machine as it does require a lot of CPU power.

Personally I think the best price/performance/longevity for the processor is the AMD64 3000+ socket 939 version, which are around £100.

Thanks for that. Sounds like too much needs replacing, so it looks like I'm going to need a new P.C. before I can make a decent job of editing my holiday videos.

    Cheers

If your editing movies get a juicy CPU. 1GB+ of RAM too. Makes video editing fast and fun instead of slow and painful.

Lots of hard disk space too. Video editing requires lots of free space.
