I'd suggest trying it on another PC if at all possible.

There is a troubleshooting guide here which is for Seagate/Maxtor drives but should really be applicable to any manufacturers. http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=External_Drive_Troubleshooter_-_My_Drive_Is_No_Longer_Detected_in_Windows_XP/2000&vgnextoid=ea834a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

I have a Maxtor drive which works fine mostly, but occasionally Ubuntu Linux loses the drive (it then has to be unmounted and then re-mounted, to use the Linux terminology). Windows seems to see it fine but sometimes takes a very long time for it to be accessed if its been idle for a while. Doesn't sound like your issue but thought I would mention it as it seems to me they can be a bit temperamental...

Do you have the hard drive turned on during boot???

morning, my laptop is on 24/7, so when i restarted i waited for the the antivirus appillication to kick in then plugged in the usb, then switched on. its seems quite a lot of things hang the minute the hard drive is plugged in!!!

could it be that an antivirus prog is scanning the disk everytime it is plugged in, locking up the system in the process

    Try this:
Right-click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. From the list that appears, select "Manage". This will bring up an administrative console. From the panel on the right, double-click "Storage" and then "Disk Management (Local)".
This will being up a list of devices showing their mount status along with a graphical display of their partition status. Search in the lower part of te screen list for your device which should appear, called "Disk X" where X is a number.
If you find it then it's a good indication that the drive itself is ok.
When you have found it, there will probably be a single partition on it, which appears as a single box with a blue bar at the top. If you right-click on this box, a list will appear. Select "change drive letter and paths" and a screen appears. Can you tell us what is listed in the box that appears? If the box is empty you can map the drive to a letter using "Add". The drive should then appear as normal.
    Just something to try...

thanks for the reply, ive tried what you suggested, the hdd is locking everything up, once connected and turned on i click on the my computer and it never opens up, if i switched the hdd off then the my computer window will open straight up. I've also tried switching off the hdd then i get into where you say to look and i can see my two internal hdds which each say they heathly but again the laptop just hangs and i have to go to task manager to close the non responding programs down such as my computer etc.

not sure if that helps you!! dont give up on me!!

edit .... ive gone into computer management and under the disk drives tab i can see 'ext disk drive usb device' i can see options such as update driver (no driver son the cd that come with it) disable or uninstal (was going to try this one!!!) its optimize for quick removal if that makes any difference, under the volumes tab theres nothing at all, all the lines are blank.
