Help Aol Adsl

hi people my girlfriend is using AOL 512k Broadband

the problem is they the main socket down stairs and another socket running offf that one to upstairs.
the strange thing is that 90% of the time the internet works on both sockets (not at same time of course), but the other 10% it doesnt even sinc with the signal (upstairs) but will (downstairs).?
i thought maybe dam wires? But neva rained for 3 days
i thought loose cable? but then why would it work most of the time and nt the others without changing something?

so now im stuck totally

i know a bit about PC so any cleaver people out there can talk to me in jargon or whatever

is there any sort or easy test that can be done on the upper line to see what is different to the downstairs line?

AOL says all the time everything is working at there side and they cant help :-(
