Where in Spain

Hi Folks,

I'm looking to book a week away in April and have managed to find some cheap flights and am now in search of accomadation and opinions.

My options are Liverpool to Valencia 9th April to 16th April or East Midlands to Palma 2nd April to 9th April. I'm thinking a couple of days in the city and then move to a fairly quiet beach type place for 5 days or so.

I've not been to either places before so peoples opinion and experiences greatly received.

Cheers

Kev

Try Calpe, about 1 hr South of Valencia.

Couple of nice beaches, plenty more within 20 mins drive. Nice scenery just inland. Mini rock of Gibraltar to climb. Working fishing port. Lots of bars, restaurants etc, but hasn't been ruined by over development.

    Been there twice.

Valencia- you could even try some of the newer resorts to it's north- but the city itelf is fabulou and the weather is likely to be better than on an island.

calpe is nice too as is denia

www.hotelopia.com is handy for local information and upto 20% of through various discounts to be found on here

another vote for Calpe...if it's recovered from last summers floods. Look at www.medhotels.com for hotels.

Right well thanks for the advice, Valencia and calpe are looking favourable but i'm struggling to find ways to get to Calpe - can anyone point me in the direction of buses or trains to get me there.

No trains to Calpe from Valencia I am afraid, they terminate at Gandia.

You would ideally need a car, then it is motorway to Calpe.

Wasn't really planning on getting a car - any idea if there are any buses?

To be honest, without a car, Calpe would be less than ideal IMO, I would look at Valencia itself, or Majorca again.

Well i've booked now for Valencia and am considering splitting my time between there and alicante. Will probably make a day trip to Calpe as climbing that big rock looks fantastic.

Any other suggestions for day trips and also accomadation greatfully received.
  • I think you can get to Calpe by train. You go from Valencia to Alicante and then take the tram back along the coast in the direction of Benidorm, which takes you to another station where you have to change to a narrow gauge line. It sounds more complicated than it actually is, but the rail journey along the coast is a feast in itself.

The rail journey is lovely but this suggestion would take HOURS! Have a look at Gandia, it's less than an hour from Valencia and it's far nicer than Calpe. It's much more Spanish and has a fantastic beach and a great Grau (harbour area). The city itself is small with a pedestrianised historical area but most people would stay on the Playa or the Grau. (The Grau is much nicer.) I don't dislike Calpe but it's not a patch on Gandia and far less accessible
