I stayed in Budapest over New Year at the 4* Marriott. I didn't book it direct but got it through Priceline and only paid £42 per night. The hotel, whilst rather uninspiring from the outside is really lovely, right by the river and in the heart of the city - every room has a fantastic view over the Danube.

If you go the Priceline route, you bid for a certain quality level in a certain area. PM me if you need any pointers or visit BiddingForTravel. The site is US based but will give you a pretty good idea where you can expect to be staying and for how much.
