Dont know if this will help. Not same situation, but our spaniel when he chippeda bone in his spinal cord he was temporary parlaysed, then a slow recovery, but when he needed 1s and twos, we had to carry him outside, then support under his back legs with a towel, (hes 35K) and had too lift him up, he couldnt understand why he wanted to go one way and his back legswouldntlet him.

Im pleased to say hes got 98% mobility back, but not allowed long walks, any pulling etc (Spaniels not pull and stop and sniff) and helped upstairs,he sleeps in bedrm!

Hes 13 now and we thank god ( not religious) that we have him.x

My rottie(40 kg at the time) has had both his cruciate ligaments repaired.....3 months between ops! He's very hyper so I was also worried about aftercare:D

The advice I was given depended on which op he had, sorry can't remember the "proper names"

    1) Fishing wire repair, when they ligament was replaced by a loop of wire
    2) Where the joint is pinned

With the first op ( which could be repeated if nessasary, that's how worried I was about him wrecking it afterwards:eek: ) he had 2 weeks room rest with only toilet breaks on a lead. No climbing on furniture or stairs. Then the exercise on lead started off at 5mins, 3 times a day for 2 weeks, 10 mins x 3 for 2 weeks after that and so on. I was told NOT to crate him as he might catch the wound.

I believe, but not sure that recovery is quicker with the second op as the joint is held in place by the pins but you would have to check with your vets.

I hope everything goes well with your hound.....I remember how nervous I was when it was my dog going in.

    O

BTW make sure that any dog gates are high enough as my stoopid dog hurdled a childgate the day he got back from the vet college:eek: sending me to make a hysterical call to the vets but no harm done luckily:rotfl:

thank so you much - we're on the final countdown now, I've fed her and will give her just a tiny bit about 9.45, I've worked out the route, it's not cold or icy so the journey should be okay, and I'm going into work afterwards as I'm really busy and it will take my mind off it - amazingly, we went for a walk tonight and she was absolutely fine, no limping at all!

I just want to get the operation over with and get her home and recuperate her! Even the guys at work today wished me luck, most of them have been offering me a gun to shoot her with!

Well, she had the op about 3pm today, the drive to the surgery was a bit hair-raising, 2 hours driving in deep and darkest countyside, but we made it, she tottered off with the nurse, rang at 5pm and the operation went very well, she was just coming round from the anesthetic, they were going to give her some supper and then I'll get her back tomorrow. Nothing untoward was found during the surgery, the plate and pins went in okay, it's just awful being in the house without her, it's so quiet!

Guess she won't be able to go on planes now without setting off the metal detectors! And I've never worked so hard as I did this afternoon to take my mind off the operation!

Aww glad it has gone well so far. She'll be back home before you know it.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

My dog Monty was in for an operation yesterday too - see thread (Did I do the right thing?).

I am feeling pretty rubbish about the whole ordeal I have to say - so hope your experience is better and your dog is o.k. - my thoughts are with you as I am going through the same sort of thing at the moment. It's horrible isn't it?
