Help Needed With Car Keys

Hi Guys,
Apologies if this is in the wrong place !
I have a peugeot 406, and need a new key for it as the fob is knackered.
It is going to cost me £100 to get one from peugeot. I have tried googling to see if I can find anywhere cheaper but have not managed to come up with anything.
Has anyone ever had to do this ? Or can anyone point me in the right direction ?
I am about to move into my own home and dont want to have to break into my carpet fund to buy it.
Thanks,
Gill xxx

Try looking in yellow pages for locksmiths as a lot of these do programmed/chiped car keys now. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Good question. Up until about two years ago I would have said your stuck with paying out the money. The reason being the chips in the keys need to be programmed and this can only be done by main dealer using a piece of kit costing 10 grand so they can charge what they like.
However two years ago I saw a piece of kit (in a main dealer) which did the same job and cost them £400. It couldnt create a key from scratch so if you lost both of yours it was still expensive but it could take the code and clone it onto a second key.
I think thats what many of the locksmiths use. They will need your first key and clone it so the second one has a matching digital code. This has brought price down quite nicely as a result.0 -
