leaving T Mobile for O2 but T Mob won't unlock phone for free

OH has been paying T Mobile £18.50 for 22 months and now wants to move to O2 Simplicity. He rang T Mob to ask if they could do him a £15 deal (answer : No) and so suggested he may move but could they please unlock his handset (ditto: no, unless you pay us £30).
He's very annoyed at their attitude as he uses only about 180-200 of his 300 mins and sends about 10 of his 300 texts every month. His phone is a D750i which don't think can be cable unlocked, but needs a code from T Mobile.

Any ideas of who to speak to at T Mobile? He's had no joy with CS or Retentions. There are network problems too in London with his calls, which often go straight to voicemail instead of ringing - meaning that 2 calls have to be made instead of one. He's well fed up with T Mobile. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • This may be a dumb question but has he checked if the phone is actually locked? I've been able to use any sim card in any new phones I've had in the last few years without having to unlock them (all originally supplied on contract from O2, so don't know if Tmobile always lock thiers?)

He doesn't 'need' it from T-Mobile specifically - he just needs his phone unlocking.

Many places - market stalls, independent phone shops etc. will unlock your phone for less than £30 (generally about £10.)

*edit* Sorry, I hadn't read it right. If he absolutely needs it from T-Mobile, I doubt you'll have a choice whether or not to pay the £30.

Though try market stalls etc first.

(Something to consider, if you can get it unlocked independently, would be taking a sim card on a network other than T-Mobile, to check that the unlocking worked - market stalls are not the most trustworthy places in the world.)

When was he told £30? I'm new to T-mobile work wise, so I don't know much, but i've had a few customers coming in to have phones unlocked, and its always been £15, and can take up to 28 days to send a letter with the instructions in.

In all frankness, go to a independant phone shop, they usually charge about a tenner, and you get to check it all there and then.

are you aware T-Mobile has been doing JustSim for the last 3-4 months? It's just the same as O2 simplicity.

All networks are focusing on loyalty this year.... your existing contributions may affect the deals you get with T-Mobile in the future. If you find that JustSim is similar to simplicity I would suggest staying with the network. If not then obviously follow the above posters advice and go to market to get a quick and easy unlock.

Yep, can be easily unlocked. It is actually a K750i but T-Mobile decided to call the ones they sold a D750i for some reason, plus they were usually silver as opposed to black.

Any unlocking shop/market stall worth its salt would be able to do this model and should charge no more than £10.
