Trouble is it's easier to get a Halford's trade card than it is to get a trade discount at a dealers.
...AND! Isn't a 2year warrenty worth the extra 30p, even if you don't get trade discount?!

Im not denying they are labelled the same but have been reliably informed that they are made from different materials and with different specifications.

i said it was a genuine vw box with a mann/vw filter in it straight from germany.
being genuine from the manufacturer (vw) is this a different material?

i cant see the factory having a grade for just mann, then a grade for just vw, then a different grade again for mann/vw filters, i think that would be costing a lot of money to set up 3 different grades doing the same thing. oh and then theres the other aftermarket filters they make aswell.
    ...work permit granted!
  • Along the same lines, all the parts under my SEAT bonnet and all over the car are stamped with the VW/Audi logo... so why pay for a VW or Audi, when you can get it cheaper from SEAT? Branding is very much over emphasised! If it does the job, and you look after it, what is the difference? As I said, don't believe your management's drivel, they are getting you to sell a more expensive item (plus labor etc..) There are always exeptions to the rule, but on the whole it is very much the case.

All parts are the same whether they are Seat/Skoda/VW or Audi and priced the same NATIONWIDE so you will never pay more or less at Audi than Skoda or visa-versa. When I was told about the difference in filters I was working at Partco, and it was the Coopers rep who told me that genuine are better and made differently with better materials etc, but to tell everyone that 'they are made in the same factory'. It's not dealer-spiel, it's aftermarket filters trying to compete! Ive been both sides of the fence, and that is why I am defending the dealer, they are genuinely (no pun intended!) better all round for quality/warrenty and vfm, yes vfm! I spent 6years working in the aftermarket sector (with 3different companies), and have now been about the same time in dealer territory (with 2companies). I can honestly say that they are light-years apart and quality across the board is better at a dealer...all in my humble opinion, of course ;)

Even my old 1994 Skoda Favorit has VW/Audi logos on many components under the bonnet (at this time VAG had only just got a stake in Skoda). There are minor differences across the VAG group. I don't know much about Seat, but I know Skoda is starting to have more flexibility than before (their own chassis designs and also their own 1.2htp engine). I believe all Skoda cars are built in Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic. Although they use many of the same components as VAG cars, it is suggested that build quality is either on par with VW and Audi or possibly better here http://briskoda.net/general-car-chat/build-quality/118410/ but being a Skoda forum possibly biassed :D

It is all about the badge unfortunately and Skodas and Seats will depreciate quicker than Audis and VWs.

Regarding parts, I have saved at least £300 on parts with many coming in at half price or less than dealers by buying from independent specialists.

At least you are sticking to your guns! I take your point that some things may be produced better by some factory making OEM stuff, but as you have read, users of other cars have found that the name dosen't always make it better, just make you feel better. And good one anewman, the second post in the forum is spot on.

In summary, I'm sure some dealer parts are better, but to say that all are is definately not right. TiTheRev, use your powers of persuasion and let us know if there are any ways of ordering through (yourself) dealers, but not "be in the trade", and save us all some money. I for one would spend the 30p extra and get a dealer part, at trade price, becuase sadly I would like to believe it is better (even if it isn't).
Time to go back on topic anyone? Cheers!
  • If like me, I buy a filter regardless of whether it is a genuine or unbranded for a two simple reasons.......

    1. Either at trade or normal price, oil filters are cheap enough.
    2. I change my oil and filter every 5000 miles.

Because I don't leave long intervals between services, a filter that is manufactured to a 'poorer' standard doesn't have to endure the life a genuine filter has to. In my opinion, I see them as fit for purpose for those 5000 miles.
I've used both branded and unbranded filters and found no problems with either, same with oils.

    Anyway,
I might be of to Halfords tonight so we'll see if I can find some more bargains!

Extra 15% off vouchers being dished out at the tills when you buy something. Only valid between certain dates. Says excludes other vouchers - but does not mention any exclusion that could be inferred to be related to the trade card. Could be ideal time to tool-up if Halfords will give trade card discount and the extra 15%.

Exact terms and conditions on voucher

    1. This voucher may be redeemed for an extra 15% off any transaction, excluding purchase of sat nav, MP3 player, Boardman bikes and gift vouchers.
    2. Only one voucher may be redeemed per transaction.
    3. Voucher valid between September 6th & September 28th inclusive.
    4. Voucher may not be used in conjunction with any other vouchers.
    5. Voucher is not redeemable for cash.
    6. Photocopies not acceptable.
    7. Not redeemable on-line at halfords.com.
Can be used with reserve & collect in-store.

As you can see no mention of tradecard discount exclusion, but your till attendant might argue the toss that number 4 applies - or the till might have other ideas.
  • Been to Halfords again this morning and bought the following -

**parts or for either a 2002 Nissan Micra 1.0 or a 2000 Vauxhall Astra 1.7DTI

    HAF281 (Nissan) RRP - £10.79, TRADE - £4.82
    HAF366 (V/hall) RRP - £7.79, TRADE - £4.78

    Oil Filters

    HOF237 (Nissan) RRP - £7.49, TRADE - £2.40
    HOF301 (V/hall) RRP - £7.49, TRADE - £5.64

    Fuel Filters

    HFF232 (Nissan) RRP - £11.99, TRADE - £6.66

    Others

    WD40 250ml RRP £2.49, TRADE - £1.99

    RRP £48.04, TRADE - £26.29

    TOTAL SAVING - £21.75

I spoke to the girl on the till regarding the 15% off voucher when using a trade card and said it was ok as they can also use the vouchers in conjunction with their staff discounts. I don't know if the 15% discount is applied before or after trade discount

No mention of oil for either, or F/F for the Astra? They too expensive to mention or not done a full service?! ;) Just knowing that they blatantly rip the most of the more unscrupulous nation off whilst rubbing their hands in glee, is enough for me to not use Halfords out of principle. Let alone the fact that I can get genuine stuff cheaper than even Halfords trade.
