Mobile phone bill/debt

In May of last year my son took out a phone contract, but was not employed at the time,so i am not sure how he managed this.Any how he ran up the bill and owes around £1000 and i am now getting calls from debt collectors but i am not sure where i stand as my son no longer lives wth us and i see him on the odd occasion.I have asked him about it and he says he is dealing with it,but he can't be if i am getting these calls.Any advice appreciated.

Tell the debt collectors to please stop harassing you as the debtor no longer lives there.
  • Thanks,i have told them numerous times but they keep pestering me for a forwarding address, but as far as i know he is staying at different addresses.
I am sure also that the company in question should not have given him the contract in the first place since he was not employed.

Write to them asking them to stop ringing you as you have told them all you can. Tell them you will report them for harassment to the Trading Standards department if they continue.

Unemployed people are not prevented from taking out contracts - this problem has arisen because he didn't pay his bills.
  • I know its his own fault, but by the same token they should not have given it to him in the first place as he was not even claiming job seekers allowance,so how do they expect people to keep up wiyh payments then?

Although the debt is nothing to do with you, you ought to get your son to try and come to some arrangerment with the debt collectors otherwise this will spiral, and the debt will increase dramatically.

If it has been passed to debt collectors, he must have just ignored all the attempts the network made to get him to contact them to set up an arrangement to pay his bills.
  • First step is telling the debt collection company that if they call or write to you again they will hear from the police. second thing is you will need to ask him what infomation he gave to the network and as it stands there is nothing that can be done wih regards to the network taking him on. There may however be a question over any credit limit on his account.
