Worth a check for viruses, spyware, trojans. Sometimes if the system is busy it will appear that the keyboard is not responding then it will catch up.

If you find it is the same keys which keep repeating or are not working then check the keys are returning properly (i.e. popping back up) and none of them are stuck together.

If you do need a new keyboard then try ebay. Lots of laptop bits there at reasonable prices - I'd guess they'd be cheaper than what you've already found. The only problem with opening laptops up is they are a nightmare to put everything back.

Theyre really easy to swop over on the Compaq Armada's, with 1 screw to undo on the underside of the laptop (little keyboard symbol beside it|) and three little clips to move on the top of the keyboard itself.

Hey presto the keyboard is removeable. All you have to do now is open the catch that holds the 2 ribbon cables in place, and your old keyboard is now removed.
