Replacing a boiler

Hi all,

I require to have my current boiler replaced (circa 20 years old) with a combi boiler. I live in a one bedroom flat with 4 radiators. So far I've had a few quotes which range from 1800 - 2700 to replace the boiler and some include other things too such as powerflush, replace thermostats on the radiators etc.

The prices I've been given for replacing the boiler itself seem to be very expensive considering I can go online and buy the boiler and flue myself for a lot cheaper than I've been quotes by the plumbers. I did some research on here and found the Worchester Bosch 24 or 28 to get fairly unaminaous positive reviews and I've for example I've seen the 24 online available for about £740 and the flue around £40, whereas some of the plumbers have said they'd charge me about 1500 for the boiler alone (and this is with makes such as the Ideal 30, Alpha 30 etc).

I need advice in that could I simply buy the boiler and flue myself and just get the Corgi plumbers to fit the plumber to effectively save me a lot of cash? Are there other parts I need to buy besides the boiler and flue? Also, is it neccessary to get a powerflush and replace the thermostats on the radiators etc?

I'm aware that it's difficult to advise without actually seeing the property etc but what size of boiler would suit a 1 bed flat with 4 radiators? WB 24 or 28? Are the Ideal boilers any good?

Also, how long would the job of replacing the boiler usually take? I presumed it would be a days work but some of the plumbers have said it would take 3, which I find ludricious, but again I'm not sure. Another thing that has been mentioned is that as I live on the top floor of a block of flats, the flue must go out the roof, which requires a slater to carry out some part of this. Can anyone confirm the details involved in this? One plumber said the slaters charge him £200 to do this which would just get added to my bill.

Any help and guidance would be massively appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks for the link, however both myself and my girlfriend (who own the property), are employed and do not claim any benefits.

    Hi

As someone who would say it will take 3 days I'm sure you'll find my advice ludricious or even ludicrous, still here goes.
If you want to try the fit only option then ask a corgi BEFORE you get the kit.

You will need the flush, trvs and a room stat.
    Avoid Ideal
The Worcester or Alpha will give a better h/w flow rate, c/h side is irrelevant, than the 24.

Or you could get a cowboy, whack it in (1 day max) then sell up and move before the problems start to show . ;) Saves a fortune.
