I want to buy vegetarian marshmallows

The only ones I can find around here contain either pig or beef gelatin.

Do vegetarian ones exist, and if so where can I get them?

Just done a Google search for kosher marshmallows, and it appears that they contain fish gelatin - so they're still not vegetarian. (Unless you're one of those people who says that they're a vegetarian but still eat fish)

    My search continues!

Like noonesperfect says, you'd probably be best off trying to make them yourself with vegegel. I don't think I've ever seen vege ones available commercially.

They're fairly easy to make, but you won't get exactly the same texture as bought ones - I've made them a couple of times and the homemade ones are much denser and chewier. IIRC you'll need a sugar thermometer too, as I think you have to boil the sugar up to a certain temp - sorry, it's been ages since I made them!

Hungerdunger, if you're willing to get some from the States, you can get http://www.sweetandsara.com/ ones from several places, that are listed on their site. I've order several times from Vegan Essentials, and I know the owner of Cosmo's - they're both great stores. Pangea (https://www.veganstore.com) also has vegan ones that they make themselves.

You can make them, but I've heard it's not easy. Did you want the marshmallows to eat by themselves, or were you planning to use them in a recipe? I think that you can get marshmallow fluff that's vegetarian if it's for cookies, etc.

  • Hi, sorry to dig up this thread, but I am desperate for vegetarian marshmallows! I was searcing on google for veggie marshmallows and came across it.

Has anyone out there found them yet? I'm not brave enough to try making them myself, looks too difficult! All the kosher/halal ones I found still contained gelatin.

  • What a great thread! Will bookmark for reference. :)

I'm sure I used to be able to buy veggie marshmallows in the supermarket (possibly Sainsburys), but I've not seen them for ages. Think they were the little ones meant for baking/decorating. I guess I just came to the conclusion that they're all non-veggie now and haven't even looked for ages. But I know the kids would love the chance to have a hot choc with marshmallows in, so it must be time to look again.

Thanks everyone for your useful suggestions. :D
