Which one: HTC Tytn II / Nokia N95 / LG Viewty?? What Contract / Not?

Options
Hi there

Hope you can help, am approaching 2 months left on my contract for my mobile phone and am looking at replacing. Will be using for business purposes more than 'pleasure' and I don't mind it being sizeable - because I mostly carry it around in a leather folder. I don't want a iPhone because of the slowness of the Internet connection and because it really is going for a ridiculous premium.

Does anyone have any views on these three ones:
- HTC Tytn II: obviously large and currently only on Orange, but loads of functionality, good layout and GPS to boot!
- Nokia N95: I like Nokias as they are well laid out, reliable and easy to use... but this seems more 'play' than serious.
- LG Viewty: Seems like a reasonable bit of kit, but perhaps is iPhone, but not quite!!

Also, if I wanted the Tytn II, but not on Orange, I guess my only option would be to buy contract-free and then take out a SIM instead... Has anyone done this? Is it reasonably easy to do?

Advice appreciated...

Thanks

  • Hi
I am in the same quandry. Overall I feel tytn 2 is the best especially as it syncs with outlook so well, has ms office too. I had a look at it, it is almost the same size of my current mobile( nokia 6680) but a little heavier. Should not occupy much space in the trouser pocket. My second choice is nokia n95. If you get three network internet connection it will sync with gmail programmes and you can get your calendar and email on it.You can sync "to do" and contacts from outlook and can use quickoffice to view documents but not edit it. Has 2 year warranty too.
Quick- give me your vedict. I don't like the viewty. other MSE users- your thoughts please and SOON!!!

  • Sorry
forgot to mention that htc tytn 2 is available on T- mobile as vario 3 and with vodafone as v1615, and o2 as stellar.
Hope this widens the choice of mobile provider.

The problem with the Tytn is that sometimes you just want a quick, normal, simple mobile!! If you text a lot you'll miss a normal keyboard. The battery lasts about a day. But there are a million and one windows mobile programs to choose from. If you plan on using GPS as your car satnav then go for the Tytn. Still one of the best gadgets going though!!
  • As said by others, the Tytn II is available from other providers (just using a different name). T-Mobile's the best option (MDA Vario III) as you get 1gb allowance per month on wnw (extra £7.50 per month) and 3gb on wnw+ (extra £12.50 per month). The tytn ii has built in wifi, hsdpa and 3g. It also has a built in gps receiver, so tomtom and the like work flawlessly with it. An excellent phone and better than the others you've mentioned.

i disagree I have a HTC touch & while windows mobile support more applications symbian ( N95 operating system )are catching up BIG time & texting is a no no, if you e-mail or text alot get the Nokia n95 & learn to use predictable text ;) people often comment at my speed replies on email & msn ( windows live ) messenger

you can hold on standing on the train with one hand & email with the other fast as lightning :D
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
  • Thanks for all the replies so far... to add to a couple of comments here...
    1. Predictive text, though better than 'old' text, is not, in my experience as quick as a keyboard (even if the KB is small!). I also have problems with inaccurate guesses for predictive text - for some reason my current mobile - an E50 - guesses 'yot' instead of 'you' and loads of other annoying-but-can't-seem-to-get-rid-of bugs.
    2. I am not that concerned about size of the device - but what it will do for me. I must admit that I am attracted by the idea of GPS as I haven't succumbed and bought one so far, but am guessing that this will be an additional charge AND fiddly to setup.

Moving onto the second point... what are your thoughts on Handset purchase options? Again, IMHO, it seems to me that most networks, particularly Orange and Vodafone try their hardest to cripple 'open' features and force you into their particular branded version of the Internet - so I'm guessing that a separate purchase of phone and sim may be in order.

I can get the handset for £360 odd (I am VAT registered so this is ex VAT) and for £22.50 a month an O2 sim with 400 mins, 150 texts and 800Mb of surfing. Which is the best deal I can find once you factor in the mobile internet charges... any thoughts on this??

    Cheers

  • what offers have others got? I am interested in a 12 month contract with any network. I don't see vodafone v1615 on the website for personal users, only offered for business users. Called voda -quoted £35 per month for 12 monhs and £100 for handset. Have any of you got better offers with htc tytn 2 handset.
    thanks

IMO the HTC TYTN2 wins by a mile ... followed by the Viewty, then the N95.

Part of my shop's business is mobile sales/repair, and have lost count how many 'flexy' cables we replace in N80/N95 handsets on a regular basis.

I've had the TYTN/VarioII for just over a year now, it sees serious daily use (and I've got a 2800ma battery on mine so it goes 3-4 days between charges) and when I disassembled it over Christmas to give it a checkover was not a hint of an issue with the flex/slide as seems too common on the Nokias ...

The Viewty is really a well thought out handset if the whole iPhone thing is to your liking, and seems better than the Apple offering for the moment.
Used my MB profits to trade London for Cyprus ...
