    Not all landords are slum landlords.
    I'm not slum at all; my tenants lurve my house....but my landlady could be considered slum....we only put up with the condition of our rental accomodation because;
    A; it has a great view of sea and Marina.
    B; it is the weeniest, smallest, grottiest, disintegrating, derelict house in a dead posh st. I have never lived in such a "nice" St in my life. I like this area!
    C; she won't do repairs.
    D; the appliances were out of the ark (we stashed them in the garage and bought new ones)
    E; the windows leak so I have to drape towels along the window ledges when a storm comes in off the sea.
    F; the garden is a jungle but we are expected to maintain it...I'm good at jungle maintenance.
    G; for us, it is just a moment in time.
    H; £1200 pcm for 1 bed house!!!

    My tenants live in my family home so they have a good deal....but they know it's not forever......

    ................And I have lost the point of the post! Sorry Macaque...just letting off steam!!!:D
  • I certainly don't see our house as our pension.
    It's the only property we own and our much-loved HOME; full stop.

    Pinkshoes;
    It is also a fact that, over the long term, equities tend to outperform property.

    Hi, I'm very surprised by this, over a ten or twenty year period say where does it prove this?

    Hi can I ask your opinion on Merryn Somerset Webbs views???
    Just that, I bought her book and read her columns in an attempt to educate myself (don't do Moneyweek as the budget gives a choice between Vogue or MW!...Vogue wins as it is my work).
    She says a similar thing.

    I will be DF in a few months and need to start planning for the future...or surviving the coming recession :eek:

    My dad is pretty smart at investing BUT he is also quite "old fashioned" so some of his advice doesn't "feel" right for nowadays.

    I have REALLY tried to educate myself on investing etc. but really struggle to understand it all...plus I am V. anti "big corporate "type companies (having been a small business for 20 yrs) but I may have to let go of my "Small business mind" in the future.

    I had the "bright" idea of Holiday Letting as a pension plan as it involves adding value and requires an understanding of dealing with the public etc etc...both things I have experience in...............would this be sensible??
    We would do it for 15 - 20 years (subject to normal life expectations of good health etc)

    any opinion would be helpful

    Thanks!

    I am surprised you challenged this. Low paid immigrants have been flooding into London over the past 5 years. Where do you think they are sleeping? The Ritz?

    http://www.londoncitizens.org.uk/files/ourhomes%20ourlondon%20report.pdf

    The real problem of overcrowding however is far greater if other definitions of overcrowding such as the Bedroom Standard are used. By this definition, as many as 175,0005 families in London are suffering the misery of living in overcrowded accommodation.
    More than 260,000 children in London live in homes without enough
    bedrooms. In some parts of London as many as one household in four is
    overcrowded.

    Sorry not being difficult but second link is only over 3 years and equities only slightly ahead and I think its res and comm property together not just residential property.
    Its also an ad for an investment in equities so those statistics are probably bendy

    The first link is talking about commercial property?

    Quibbling does not serve your cause well and don't forget the first law of holes. When you are in one, stop digging.

    The bit I wanted you to look at is the forecast for the next 20 years.

    Lmao...I'm only asking as everything I have ever read says the opposite of your earlier post vis a vis long term equity vs res property

    Just wanted you to explain as I didn't understand not try and browbeat me into going away:confused:
