Just got home from work to find my dog,a large GSD, has snaffled a half pack of Settlers Tums.
Its the large pack of 75 in a Tub & quite brittle plastic, so first thing I did was check I could account for at least the majority of the bits left on the floor. Which thankfully I can, so hopefully no emergency surgery to remove plastic from tumtum but....
50 odd antacids surely cant be great! Mind you I'm thinking they're just Calcium Carbonate (chalk) with flavours so......:o
I really cant afford an emergency vet visit for no reason (I think he is covered for treatment not just checking over) & if he shows signs of ill effects I will immediately take him to the vet. So what I'm asking is has anyone else's doggy done anything similar & do I need to panic just yet?
I'm guessing the worst would be constipation? what do you knowledgable ones think?

ahh but knowing my vet they will insist on seeing him straight away rather than see what develops & that will cost if he doesnt need treatment afterwards, thats why I asked for opinions, ya see. I'm very torn what to do for the best - both for him & my pocket..haha
I dont know how long ago he did it as I've been out at work & I've a while before the Vets shuts so I'll hang on a bit to see if anyone has any other advice...I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0 -
Call your vet. It should only constitute a normal consultation fee as you're not going to them out of hours. Better to be safe than sorry.
Do you know who manufacturers them, and what the ingredients are? I had a quick google, but couldn't find out."No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -

well the active ingredent is just Calcium Carbonate which is chalk so dont think that will harm him & the rest are colours flavours & a binding ingredient
sugar, glucose, starch, talc, magnesium sterate, citric acid, & the coloursI THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0 -
I´m no chemist but I know calcium carbonate reacts with strong acids to produce carbon dioxide. Whether stomach acids have the same effect I don´t know but I would look out for a distended belly at the very least.0

I can't find any obvious reference to it being harmful, but I'm not an expert. If it were my dog, I'd call the vet to be on the safe side ASAP. The quicker you call, if there is any treatment to be carried out, the more likely it is to work.

If it's any help I used to eat about 20 of these a day for acid reflux (which has now gone thank god) and it didn't do me any harm.. if anything my nails and hair were much stronger for all the calcium.. lol
I would just keep your eye on him.. and try and get him to drink lots of water to dilute it.. maybe make up some gravy or something to get him to take more water in.. also a nice walk so he can digest might help..

When i lived at home, many moons ago, our dog ate some Rennies, we weren't sure how many but at least 4 were left in the pack. we took him asap to the vets and were almost laughed at, but you can't be too careful if you love your pets.
p.s he did release quite a lot of 'gas', so good luck with that bit!:heart2::heartpuls:heart2: I WOULD NOT CHANGE MY AUTISTIC DAUGHTER FOR THE WORLD

Well I rang the vet & the assistant checked with the vet & although I could tell from her voice when she came back on the phone that they had had a good laugh (which was acctually reassuring) they think he will be fine! - maybe diarrohrea so bland meal tonight or if constipation then oily fish & milk tomorrow lol!I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0
