An yXP would do to re-install, it's worth copying all the drivers onto a CD to save a load of hunting around on the internet after the re-install

it might be worth going to control panel and then system, hardware, device manager and seeing if their are updates for you graphics card drivers

To be honest the whole house is chaos, I can't find any of the original discs for either pc!

I already updated the drivers for the graphics card, no improvement.

bad news is I have seen some mention of chip failure on the motherboards causing this

Yes, that's something I was thinking too. That would be the end for this pc. Then a search for a new (cheap) one without Vista!

theres been a couple of basic Dells around for under £200, without screen, XP as an option when you build

drop the warranty to minimum and choose XP instead of vista at no cost
