MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Should Ken ‘save’ Deidre’s kids from being taken into care?

This could very well be a scam but I would give her the money if she seemed genuine.
I have had first hand experience of Social Services. They have so much power even Solicitors are afraid of them. Did you know they can apply to the courts without your knowledge (or your solicitors) to have your kids taken away.0 -
Firstly, social services would not 'take the kids away' just because Deidre has no money and £10 willbe going on drugs or alcohol NOT ELECTRIC - BE REALISTIC ....
I have a heart but i also have a brain and that doesnt tell me to give her a tenner . If she really needs a tenner ... social services will check the electric and give her some cash for it anyway. Its the house being a state thats the issue not the electric and tidying up the house is FREE.. ... and ive seen this scenario thousands of times being in the social care business. Its like ' i have no money but enough to stick a cigarette in my mouth or drink a pint of beer or even shoot up' but not enough for electric
so NO I WOULDNT GIVE HER A £10Here's this week's hypothetical situation for you to cogitate on:Should Ken ‘save’ Deidre’s kids from being taken into care?
Arriving at the local cash machine, Ken gets stopped by a panicky young woman who’s leaving the ATM in tears. She says her name’s Deidre, and asks Ken to help her out with £10; she’s run out of electricity, the bank won’t let her take any money out, and social services are about to come and inspect her house. She says they’ll take her kids away if they see it how it is; that’s all Ken knows. Should Ken give Deidre the cash?Click reply to have your say

They can only apply to remove you children if they have sufficient evidence that they are at risk of harm. They never apply otherwise and always seek legal advise prior to doing so. People like you give them a bad name they are protecting children and always insist on looking within the family. Aim is actually to keep children with their families not take them away from them !0

Why do so many think they are a better judge than social services are? Social services don't make a decision after only one visit. They would visit many times and get the full picture of the situation before doing anything drastic.
If it is the first time anything like this has happened, I'm sure they would be able to apply same degree of discretion as you would.
However if they think there is a reason for concern and they think it is best to take action, then why do you think you know better considering it's a person who is a complete stranger to you? By giving her £10 you could be keeping social services in the dark which may not be the best for the children!!0 -
Social services only take children into care if they are in immediate serious danger e.g. in the care of someone who is incapable of looking after them due to substance misuse.0

I would definitely give somone a tenner.
If I was convinced they seemed genuine - then I would no problem.
Its a sad world we live in when everyone is so suspicious that people are not honest and only out to con everyone else.
Thank goodness we hear from time to time nice stories. I do blame the press - sadly good news doesn't sell newspapers......Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Let me deflect the original question a little.
About 80% of people said they wouldnt give the 10 pounds to Deirdre
What If you knew she was geniune, what would you do?
A. Give her the tenner cash?
B. Acompany her to the local shop to top up?
C. Not give her anything, on the basis that our government has already been given enough taxes to help out those who are genuine and on the basis that you are not so lving the problem but merely treating the result.
A, B or C???0 -

C i know it sounds cruel but she needs to help herself out by getting a job and working her way up. As i said before if social services are involved they must have a genuine belief and evidence to support that. Yes she may be genuine but £10 will only go for one week (possibly not even that) and then she's back in the same position.0 -
Don't be conned, give the money to your favourite charity if you want peace of mind.0
