Fridge makes noises

Im a student and our University has given us all fridges for our rooms, to stop us bringing in our own and shorting out the power...

When ever mine starts to cool down, as it does about once every 45 mins, it starts squeeking and making cracking noises and little knocks. I suspect this is surely the tiny freezer department tht it has in the top corner.

Is this natural? and is there anyway of stopping it?

Can I ask if it sounds like a frog? I know that sounds stupid but ours at work makes a frog sound and apparently it's just air in the back.

umm its a sort of whine. it only does it when it starts cooling down (ie starts whirring, but then you can hear the whining and cracking.
    not like a frog really.

If it sounds like a lesser spotted Amazonian tree frog this is quite normal. If, however it sounds more like the banded Patagonian ground frog this indicates that your fridge is about to explode and destroy your house !!

    lol, class..
sometimes you will get nocking because the pump is starting.
Do the other fridges make the same noise?
I would expect it to be new, an thus not make much noise..

I rember a time when the in room fridge was a bag out the window! and that wasnt that long ago!

yeah its new. It didnt make any noise (except the average whirring) until it had quite a build up of ice around the freezer bit nearing christmas. then was off for christmas, and came back and made noises whenever trying to cool down. Annoying as it wakes me up at night (yes we student do sleep from time to time, well it is exam period)

As for the frogs im guessing it made no noise before as they were only tadpoals. Sadly im not a fan of frogs so dont particularly know what a 'banded Patagonian ground frog' sounds like and am now getting worried.

We bought a brand new fridge freezer three years ago and it has always made noises like a chicken laying an egg- lots of squeaks and whines and groans. I have always put it down to it being a frost-free fridge. Happens more at night than in the day so maybe a the fridge is on a cycle?
  • I thought you weren't supposed to sleep with a fridge in your room?

I live in an open plan flat and can hear my fridge making annoying noises.

Well they supplied us the fridges and the only place we can keep them is in our rooms. I suppose its something natural for a fridge then.

Wow the expansion of gases sounds safe, especially with those little tubes, and the proximity to my bed and desk where i spend most of my time.

Anyone know if a fridge takes indigestion tablets?

If youve only just got it and it was new Id get the uni to get a replacement. In any case, it sounds a bit faulty, and they'll have the recipet etc, probably best to just get a replacement.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
