DDR Memory????

Some people really shouldn't be allowed on ebay
I found out what memory my desktop needs - apparently it needs DDR Ram. It has 256 on it and I want to upgrade it to 512 as a minimum.
So I decided to buy 2 items on e bay
2x DDR 256mb used for a fiver
1x DDR2 1GB new - total cost around £17
Went for the 2x256 in case the 1gb didn't work.
I think you know where this is going......
It turns out that all the memory sticks I've just bought have slightly different interfaces to the slots that I have! I couldn't spot the differences from the photos on the listings but they won't go in! The nick in the interface is in a slightly different position and the contacts do not line up and are different widths. I didn't count them.
Am I right that I actually need DDR and have DDR2?
Also, the 1GB stick says 2GB??
So what's all this about then?

go onto the crucial website and use the system scanner, it will tell you what you have installed, what type you need and how much you can have.0

DDR 184 pin
DDR2 240 pin
So you would need the 184 if it only supports DDR0 -
yes, I think you are right. DDR2 is different to DDR, they're not compatible, different notch positions and different number of pins. The scanner at Crucial should say which you can use, its likely to be DDR for an older PC.
oops, beaten to it0 -
BTW play does some deals on memory.. Might be better buying new rather from e-bay as memory can be rather tempremental0

I'll go to cruicial when I'm on the desktop again.
I did get some basic prices for DDR memory - looking at around £50 to £60 for 1 gb.
Also, would I be right in thinking that the DDR2 1GB stick that I have that says 2GB is 2GB not 1?Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -
As scooter says, Play has some offers right now. I don't see anywhere cheaper, but others might know otherwise.0

Unless some of the chips are knackered and only 1GB is working.. I had that happen to a 512 with me...turned it into a 2560 -
