Whatever route you go down if the other driver has no insurance and/or assets you may be just throwing your money away trying to recover the cost of your damage.

The only certain thing is the law abiding motorists will always come off second best to those who drive untaxed, unregistered, uninsured cars. generally the police do not give a damn as it is too much bother for them. There are easier fish to catch. Those of us who are all legal.

If you were driving with only third party insurance in someone elses car - you were driving illegally. The insurance you have only covers you in your vehicle (the one you've given the registration number of to the insurance company).

As far as I am aware, it is impossible to be legal in someone elses vehicle with third party insurance (hire cars are a different matter). Comprehensive is the only way to go.

My suggestion would be to drop it, because as I see it you could be done for driving without the correct insurance (unless there are facts not disclosed).

I am insured fully comp on my own car, but I think I am only insured third party when I drive someone elses car.

That simply isn't true. I'm TPFT on my own vehicle, but my policy states that I can drive any other car with the owner's permission and be covered third party only for that vehicle. You don't need to be fully comp to have this on your policy. It's down to the individual insurance companies. I'm with Provident. You are only legally required to have third party cover to drive a car.

Now be Honest - If you hit someone else's car (and you think no-one saw you) would you stop and leave your details knowing that in the long run its going to cost you a lot of money in costs then insurance etc I DON'T THINK SO!!!
