    a) strictly speaking what has this got to do with ebay?

    I think it's the fact that we go on about accepting bank transfer, and advocate giving out your bank details willingly.
    My TV is broken! :cry:
    Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

    So based on this, if you pay for something by cheque on ebay to a dodgey seller, not only might you run the risk of not getting the item but now have the risk of having a fake direct debit set up against your account as they'll have both your address and sortcode + account number (from bottom of cheque)

    Correct, and they also have your signature as well.

    Therefore based on the 'shock horror' news story it must be true that a cheque is a completely bad thing to use ever again and we should all tear up our cheque books immediately.
