I agree. As soon as you got direct debit set up on your account and a letter in the post saying to confirm your details most people would spot something was wrong.
I think it is a bit of a non story personally and shows a lack of real understanding by certain members of the press. Still, as a buyer I would never use a bank transfer for purchases anyway and as a seller I will still offer them, not that any one of my buyers actually uses them.
I also wonder if that now means that complete and utter death of cheques, or haven't people realised that when they send a cheque the bank sort code and account number is on there?

I do think it's stupid that the bank can't find out who set up the DD... but then, the article didn't mention the police - surely they'd have been a better bet?My TV is broken!

a) strictly speaking what has this got to do with ebay?
and b)as a buyer I would never use a bank transfer for purchases anyway and as a seller I will still offer them, not that any one of my buyers actually uses them.
i was in the same boat as you soo, until i offered discounts for buyers who paid into my HSBC account, although the uptake isn't exactly going to have paypal trembling its been positive and i'm still saving compared to what I would have paid in paypal fee's0
