Carpet cleaning company or Do it yourself with a Rugdoctor

Hi all,

I would like to get are carpets throughout the house cleaned and sanitised before our new additions arrival towards the end of February.

Do you have any thoughts about Carpet Cleaning companies? How much did you pay ans was it worth it?

I have read up on the Rug Doctor but managing going to work and no sleep is something else so I would like to know how easy it would be to use the machine and if the results were the same as opposed to paying a cleaner to do it?

Thanks.

We used one a few years ago on our rented flat when we first bought it, then we were so impressed with it we hired it again the following weekend to do our house.

It removed all sorts of stuff from the carpets including paint!

It was easy to use but then again, despite apperances, I wasn't pregnent at the time, and have not been since :)

  • My sister bought an upright Vax machine from Netto or Aldi, about £60, and I used it in our house and was well impressed with the results. Why not but a cheapy if you can then you can clean them more regular.

I wasn't thrilled with the results I got from the Rugdoctor machine. Used it a couple of times and yes, it shifted surface grime, but I wouldn't say I felt the carpets were sanitised.

My sister and me hired the rug doctor between us. It was brilliant and although quite hard work, I managed it okay. I was so shocked to see what came out of the tank.
I did 2 settees, stair and landing carpet and a bedroom carpet in just over an hour.
  • i used to hire the rug doctor every six months and found it ok to use - just a hassle fetching etc - the job it did was good and carpets always came up well. I have now bought a vax for about £150 and it enables me to clean the carpets when they need doing rather than all in one go and also clean up little spills here and there. I am 7 months pregnant and i don't think that i would use the rug doctor whilst pregnant - but my vax is just like a normal hoover so i use that.
    now mum of 4!!!
  • I was scared by the amount of crud the rug doctor that I hired got out of my old place. They're very good and I will definitely hire again in my new house.
  • Hi all,
Even I am planning to hire one from Rug Doctor.

I hired a professional cleaner in Nottingham. he did well but for couple of weeks we had itching if skin touches the carpet. like sometime I used to sit on floor while fixing PC or playing cards in big group.
Anyways. now I have a small daughter at home I was wondering what how the RugDoctor chemical is? is it very strong. I spoke to Rugdoctor customer care but they say their chemical is safe for kids.
Ofcourse I will make sure my daughter don't get in contact with carpet until it gets dry.
Any experience / suggestion is much apericiated.
    Thanks in advance

Firstly, whilst I can agree with others that the machine does exaclty what it is supposed to (and very well, I may add) there is a considerable downside to Rug Doctor's hire agreement - irrespective of whether you obtain it from Morrisons, B&Q, Homebase or whatever.

    When you plan to clean your carpet(s) would you think for one minute that you'll be CREDIT CHECKED? Or that your hire of the machine will be reported to credit reference agencies? How about you sign away your right to be free ofr marketing emails, junk mail and fax and telephone calls? Believe it or not, your agreement to hire has by DEFAULT given your agreement for your personal data to anyone that Rug Doctor chooses to sell it on to, unless you remember to opt out by ticking the relevant box, buried within the small print at the bottom of the form. I'm awaiting a response from the Data Protection Commissioner on whether this is allowable for an opt out (it is SO wide-ranging, it should really be an opt-in), however, this is nother instance when a commercial entity is using your data to peruse your credit file when you have no requirement for obtaining credit. They could argue it is to stop their machines being stolen, however you don't need to have a full credit check for this, simply an ID check. Here are the full terms, read and be amazed;

DATA PROTECTION NOTICE: Rug Doctor Ltd may use any of the informarion you have provided to us for the following purposes; administration of your purchase, marketing, credit checking, analysing your purchasing preferences and product quality, conductng market research surveys, host mailing, list rental, warranty administration and providing you with information about other services and products we offer. We search the files of credit reference agencies who will record the search. We may share your information with our group companies, agents and service providers and also other carefully selected third parties. We or they may contact you by mail, telephone, fax or e-mail with details of products and services that may be of interest to you.

If you do not want to be contacted by Rug Doctor Ltd its group companies or by third parties for marketing purposes, please tick this box [ ] or write to The Data Protection Officer at Unit 29, Decoy Road, Timberlaine Trading Estate, Worthing, West Sussex BN14 8ND but remember if you do, we will not be able to notify you of special offers or promotions.

And to think all you wanted was a clean carpet? Of interest is that this entire request it wholly inappropriate, you've purchased nothing, only hired a machine. As for credit checking, this is a complete abuse of the process. Comments welcome!
