Is it only slow when using the net? Do you have a slow internet connection?

I dont think its very fast. Am at work at the moment but did a speed test last night and think it was less than 2mb download, cant quite remember now.

Its talk talk but i have a lap top wirelessly connected to it and it runs much quicker on the net. Surely the desktop should be quicker being attatched by a lead?

If you do decide to reformat, please let us know the outcome. It should not be necessary to do this but if you have tried all other options it may be worth doing before buying more RAM.

Will do....as I say its had all sorts on it over the years so I'll try that first.

My OH has just put the machine back together at home and then started downloading some music from Ares. We have never had any problems with this but he said it downloaded 3 songs and has now stopped.

Has anyone used this and had any problems? Dont want to re formatt and put this back on, only to find it to be the root of my problems. ( I also have it on my lap top but have no problems there!)

Why don't you just uninstall the illegal P2P software and see if that improves your machines performance?

hi, you will probably find that due to windows updates and all the installed programs that the swap file (virtual memory on the hard drive) will be getting pretty big, do you notice that the hard drive seems to be running a lot? if so then more memory is the answer. something for the meantime is open up a dos prompt, type msconfig <enter> go to the startup tab and disable unused progs, i.e. anything with symantec in the path.
    hope this helps.

I will try this and also once Ive re formatted I've leave Ares off till I see how the machine is running. See if once I add it the machine slows down or not. ( ps. didnt realise it was illegall...thought it was just file sharing? between pc's)

You may not need to format and reinstall everything if you remove the illegal software and try it then.

As play have some good deals on memory at the moment. Would any of the 512 mb here be any good for my machine?

  • You can reformat your machine.. it will run fast for a while.. then after all the windows updates it will begin to get slower, then after various downloading and installing it will get even more slower, within a few months it will be slowing to a halt again. As for downloading mp3s on ares. Running a virus scanner is going to slow you down a hell of alot more than ares will unless youve downloaded some realy dodgey stuff off there but if you were running a virus scanner and just downloading mp3s it is highly unlikely ares will cause a problem. Id recomend reformating and buying some more ram.
