Unlocking a Virgin Mobile?

I understand that if you top-up your virgin mobile with £30 (I think!) then you can request for the unlocking code for free.

My question is around the conditions of top-up:

1. Do you have to top-up with £30 in one go?
2. Do you have to top-up with £30 in one sim or can you spread it across 2 virgin sim card?

3. Do you have to top-up £30 on the sim card that accompinied the phone that you want to unlock?

4. How do you ask for the code, via phone or can you do it through email?

Thanks

  • I bought a virgin mobile 3-4months ago & asked for unlock codes, it went off the total i'd topped up on my account since purchase, it has to be £30 spent on the virgin sim/number and phone you want to unlock so you wouldnt be able to spread across 2 sim cards.....dial 789 from your virgin handset to ask for an unlock code, they will ask for your phones IMEI number and your virgin mobile number....they will send you unlock codes & instructions through the post in a few days

I'm assuming you're after the code to unlock your phone to use it on any network? Because you can find the code online for free, for several mobile phones.

If you cannot find it online, many phone shops will do it for approx. £10 - try asking the network you're switching to if they can do it cheaper than £30. (They should be able to, seeing as they'll be gaining a customer from it.)

Even if the network you're moving to won't do it, I still wouldn't ask the network your'e leaving, as they'll want to scam as much money out of you as they can before you leave.

The shops where they sell spare cases/covers for phones sometimes unlock phones, I know in Hull there is a stall in the city centre that unlocks phones for £10 which also sells covers for phones.

i really do not want to spend any money on unlocking it as the phone itself is only £10. I have already got £20 top up vouchers from Virgin so that's why I wanted to know the Virgin route...

Virgin is very good for sending you unlocking codes if you have spent £30 on your sim card. I have bought 2 new cheap nokias from virgin and have asked for unlocking codes to unlock them. Better to phone, the second time I asked for the code I thought I was going to be asked why I have used that sim card for a few months. Code given both time with no questions asked.
