Ensuring Royal Mail delivery

I have just found out that a letter I sent abroad by Royal Mail a couple of months ago has not been delivered.
The letter has no monetary value itself, but has important implications.
I have sent similar letters by Royal Mail in the last few years, and there was no problem with these.
It went by normal delivery.
I have heard that extra services would be of dubious value in ensuring that the letter would be delivered.
I have no reason to believe or disbelieve that.

Should I just resend the letter, accepting that the non-delivery was a one-off event, or is there something I could do to better ensure proper delivery?

If you're sending it abroad then obviously it's beyond Royal Mail's direct control once it leaves these shores, although there are international tracking options - where were you sending it?

What I was looking for was information on whether tracking/signature services would help in my situation.

Knowing that the letter had reached a particular sub-office abroad does not seem helpful in actually getting the letter delivered, and the claim I have heard about signatures is that, for receivers of large amounts of mail, single letters are not signed for, there is only a signature for a bulk delivery.

There's certainly been much less emphasis on signatures in the UK post-pandemic, but that isn't likely to be relevant to wherever you're posting to - are your impressions formed by lived experience of the postal service(s) in that specific country/region/town/street, etc?

"… The letter has no monetary value itself, but has important implications."

If the "implications" are important rather than the letter itself, can you not send an email or a telegram? (Are there still such things as telegrams? I dunno).

If a letter is the only form of communication available, then the letter becomes as valuable as the "implications"…

For anything particularly important (or if you want decent tracking info) you're probably better to use an alternative courier service than the "standard" postal system, which in some countries is (even) less reliable than Royal Mail.

My own experiences with Royal Mail has been almost exclusively good, as explained earlier.
The usefulness, or otherwise, of extra services has come from online sources. And it was peoples experience of these services was what I was asking about.
My impressions of commercial services is also only from online sources. And the same companies have been praised and lambasted by different posters.

I have no other contact details, just the mailing address.

But, at the risk of labouring the point, are you gathering information about deliveries to the specific country or location that you're sending to (and its postal services), or just reading stuff about UK postal experiences? The latter will be of limited relevance to international deliveries but if you want feedback on the former then it seems unlikely to be productive if you refuse to identify where you're referring to…

The problem with RM is that their service stops at the border. They will have commercial agreements with post services in other countries but as with any commercial arrangement the ability to enforce them can be limited. So how tracking works, signature on delivery etc and everything else is highly dependent on the postal service in the destination country.

If you want more detail then you may be better off paying a hell of a lot more for a service like DHL or UPS where they are responsible for the end to end delivery in most countries. That said, there will still be local differences, in some countries the norm is people collect their mail not have it delivered to their door or the likes of Canada that is stopping door to door letter services and introducing communal mailboxes

I kept the query general so as to be of greater use, to others, and myself if I post to other countries.
If you want a more explicit query then:
will the use of Royal Mail tracking/signature services increase the probability of the letter being correctly delivered
other commercial services have received both good and bad reviews - what do people consider in terms of whether or not to use them if the most important result is correct delivery?

I send a few letters & parcels overseas, unfortunately RM made the choice a bit more complicated a few months ago. Presumably you sent the previous letter by Standard Air Mail, so no tracking. I prefer Int Tracked, the smallest size is Large Letter (Europe costs about £10) it is insured up to £50 but you would have to prove the value, it doesn't guarantee arrival but you can usually see tracking online for UK & overseas so you know where it is (stuck). Also Tracked & Signed, you can send a letter (a bit cheaper) but only covered for £20 and I wouldn't count on a signature at arrival if they are out.

    Hope that helps.
