Is it worth recording TV, anymore?

Hi there.

I currently have a Freesat recorder but I have found that I have genuinely not used it for over six months, now.

I just find that everything is online, anyway, so you can just look for it on there.

I occasionally used Freesat for watching Live TV (for example World Cup matches) but have found that these are all streamed, now, as well and even in better quality.

I just wondered whether anyone else had noticed the same. Do you think I would regret getting rid of the Freesat recorder or do you think they have had their day, now?

My only slight reservation is that certain BBC series are sold off and thus disappear from their archives but they often appear on Netflix, eventually, anyway.

You've got two combined devices there.

A Personal Video Recorder that allows you to record anything coming from the satellite that's free.

A freesat decoder for watching anything coming over satellite.

Not everything coming via freesat may be available to stream (and vice versa) but probably not very much.

Unless it's taking up valuable space or just looks horrible I'd be keeping it until it breaks.

I regret the loss of mine because it broke down.

Your last reason, series and bits of series vanish if they are being rerun or sold off then you need to sign up and pay to watch them.

I could skip the adverts. I'll swear they deliberately show intimate health conditions at mealtimes, dentistry and funerals when you want to relax.

    Pausing live TV.

Un plug it if you wish but keep it. Or donate to charity shops. Quite a few people are buying them again rather than pay for streaming and because you can choose exactly what you want to watch.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • I use it to keep my kid entertained when the internet is not available, this happens occasionally.

Even when BBC shows are sold off, you might find they are still available from some other service like Apple TV.

You should try ad supported US streaming services, most the adverts are for medicines and they have to list the potential side effects normally with helpful tips like it may cause breathing problems and you should seek urgent medical assistance if it does.

Havent had an ability to record TV for many years since dumping SkyHD and havent missed it. Occasionally there is stuff i would like to watch again that I cannot find but that was also the case before dumping sky as i hadnt thought to record it in the beginning

I record most programmes onto our pvr rather than watch live as it allows me to skip the adverts. I also find it much easier to find programmes to watch than plough through various apps and being bombarded with trailers for something I have no interest in.

Basically, my viewing habits are virtually the opposite of the OP!

I still use my satellite recorder mainly because of skipping the ads. The recorder I've got is great, you press 3 to skip 15 second, 6 to skip 30 seconds and 9 to skip a minute so it's very quick to get past the adverts.
