I'm on a BG fix until 6th Feb - Gas only though. I worked out the cost of switching now against waiting until February and the figures all indicate to wait it out. Don't know about electricity. Presumably you are paying the 5.35p per kWh same as mine? You'll be making more in saving until February on that rate , than you would save from doing a switch from February onwards based on my gas calcs. Any fixes available before then will account for the expected rise in January anyway.
Fortunately the majority of your high gas use should be done by the beginning of February if you are anything like us (last December and January were over £150 for us, but February was £100 and March was about £70). My plan is to switch tariff near to the end of January either to another BG fixed tariff or to another company that allows fee free internal switches, with the hope that better deals come along later in the year so I can switch again.
Worth double checking that your gas and electric are on the same tariff - ours have always been separate with British gas.

Thank you for all your comments, seems a lot in similar situations. I have always been savvy I thought and get the best switch but no avoiding the massive rise that looks to be heading our way

My British Gas collective Nov26 fixed rate deal ends on 1 December 2026. The current monthly Direct Debit is £157 & that has worked out as accurate for my usage.
The new fixed deal for one year is quoted as £240 per month, a rise of 53%, in a 14 month period.
I have looked at other offers and there is no fixed rate deal to make me want to change supplier.
I am shocked & stunned by this. How can inflation be 3.4% now forecast to grow to 3.5% in 2027 when so many basics are racing up at these mad rates?

You should be focusing on the tariff rates to see how much it has actually increased by rather than the monthly direct debit amount.

Household energy costs only make up ~3% (electricity 2%, gas 1%) of the basket of goods and services that contribute to the CPI calculation. So a 33% increase in energy costs would result in a 1% increase in CPI.

Did you check your account, you should see an exclusive offer for a fix for 24 months. Well that's what my shows in my family members account, and they have an increase of 10 pounds per month over their current monthly cost.
