Can the pub ban me for something my husband has done?

Both my husband and I have been banned from our local pub, which is the only place to go to in the village.

It is owned by Punch, one of those pub companies and run by a licensee. The present one is dreadful, there is no food, it is not open at lunchtime and frequently shut in the evening as well and recently often runs out of beer!

Anyway the present licensee has given in his notice, but there does not seem to be anyone else coming in. My husband and another drinker got together and wrote an e-mail to Punch just asking them what was going on and suggesting a village take-over of the pub if no other landlord wanted it. I had no part in this at all.

Now we have both been banned, the e-mail contained no criticism of the present guy, just was trying to find out what was happening. Others have been banned as well I gather.

My point is that I am being punished for something my husband has done, not that he did anything wrong. I am aware that licensees can ban whoever they like from their pub, but is this legal? Is there anything I can do to get back at this pathetic man?

Yes, they can choose who they let into their pub. They can’t discriminate based on protected characteristics, such as gender but that isn’t the case here.

As long as the reason for the ban does not involve a protected characteristic the pub owners/licensee can ban anyone they like.

Things that are different: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

Do they actually know who you are? ie can they match your face to your husbands name?

    If not, just ignore it.

If it's going to be a different landlord, just wait untill he has gone.

I agree with the 2 earlier replies but it does sound an excessive reaction if the email was as you say it was.

Especially if they have banned other people too.

Maybe Punch don't intend to run it as a pub but sell the building to Tesco or some other company or knock it down and sell the land for building housing.

But if the pub isn't going to reopen - and it's as bad as you say it is - does it really matter if you're barred?

It is a small pub and everyone knows everyone else. The landlord did not even bother to inform us of the ban himself, he asked his long standing barmaid who is an old friend of ours to do the deed.

The trouble is there is nowhere else to go to without driving some way. All of our friends meet in the pub, it is our social life or was.

One of the other men who was banned had applied to make the pub an Asset of Community Value which should stop Punch from selling it for housing. However, it is the licensee who has banned us, not Punch so as he is going it should not make any difference to him. He is just a puerile loser of a man.

You only ask about yourself being banned.

You want to go without your husband?
