If it was a new Defender it would be JLR’s problem as it would be under the manufacturers warranty for 3 years.

I was browsing the latest What Car in the supermarket earlier to look at their reliability survey. Somewhat surprisingly the Range Rover Sport was top rated in it's category, rather less surprising the Range Rover Evoque rated bottom in it's category and Land Rover as a whole came last in the list of manufacturers (Suzuki were top).
Found it on their website:

There are some of us that have been on JLR's warranty merry-go-round before and are wiser for it.
Yes you are correct it should be their problem if it's under warranty, but the dealers/manufacturers don't give a stuff that you take it in and pick it up from the dealers 3 times a month because they have no idea how to fix it.
They also aren't too bothered you'll be without wheels for months on end because they can't diagnose it and have to wait for a specialist or they can't get the parts or both and the one courtesy car they have in the entire country is also broken down and they can't fix that either.
They also won't give a toss your car is ∞ in the queue of similar badly built cars they have out back waiting for them to decide they can't fix them either.
My advise, buy a Toyota.

My advise, buy a Toyota.
They are far too easy to steal now that thieves are tooled up with canbus injectors. I'd buy a Suzuki!
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

depends where you are, I am not aware of car theft being an issue around here

The cars at top of the list as most stolen are usual in two categories. Joy riders and stolen for export/parts.
Your Fiesta's, Focus's and Golf's make top the first category. The amount sold and registered obviously helps push those figures up.
And your higher end cars like Land/Range Rovers, Mercs, BMWs and yes even the Toyotas tend to go for parts/export. (I suspect that Toyotas get stolen for hybrid parts).
Without digesting the figures over the last few years and comparing the amounts registered, I would hazard a guess there's probably a lower risk with a Toyota than a Land/Range Rover based on sales vs thefts .
But the original jist of this thread was about the reliability and I don't think anyone would argue against a Toyota being more reliable than a JLR product. JLR products do tend to come out near the top of the least reliability surveys and servicing and repairs do tend to be problematic, lengthy and costly.
I also agree that Suzuki tend to build reliable cars, ours have been rock solid but they have nothing comparable with a Defender/Rav 4.
They do sell the Indian built Grand Vitara in other markets, but it's no where near the same as a Defender/Rav 4. I had one on hire on holiday a few years ago. It's ok but a little flimsy and tinny.
