Doesn't really seem to be a rant, or did you expect NatWest to do anything else in this situation? Sounds to me like their response was exemplary…

dont know why people carry things in their back pockets. Too easy to fall out or even be dipped. At a family party weekend gone I took my nephews card and phone as a joke and he didn't notice.

Sounds like everything worked as it should. Personally I keep my CC locked until I need to use it and my debit card I have a contactless limit of £30 set on it so if anyone did get hold of my card they couldn't do much damage and I'd be alerted quickly as I'm sure most thieves would try and go on a spending spree and try and spend more than £30.
At least you've learned a good lesson to take more care and not put your card in your back pocket again

The first thing the person who found the card thought to do was to try to spend £170 at Sports Direct…
What a country we've become.

Finder clearly stupid, could have got 70 sausage rolls at Greggs.

Wouldn’t they also need your PIN number to spend over £100 on a single transaction?

NatWest let you increase your contactless limit, no idea what the max limit might be - probably personalised per account.
Sounds like the card finder was not of the thinking kind.

It was an online purchase…

Online order with a stolen card? For delivery to home address? Or click'n'collect in store (where they need ID in same name as on order)?
Both of which take a week?
Should have gone for the sausage rolls.

Don't shoot the messenger - I was just reiterating what OP said, rather than analysing it or commenting on the wisdom (or otherwise) of what was attempted!
