Renters - are family or friends pressuring you to buy?

I get this occasionally from older acquaintances.
I think that a lot of people in their 50s + think this way. 'Renting is dead money' is their mantra, because they can't understand that the economic situation in this country has changed drastically. All they see are the paper 'gains' their ticky-tacky Span houses have made since they bought them for twelve pounds fifteen-and-six in 1970 (On one wage).
But they can't connect this with FTBs being priced out and think that it's because we waste our money on holidays etc - conveniently forgetting that holidays are far cheaper relatively now than they were in the old days.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
20yrs ago the Council started selling houses to tenants in the area I was in at the time, my family all agreed it was a good idea but I chose not to do it, less than a month later I was made redundant & that would have been that if I 'd listened to them.PasturesNew wrote: »Why would that be?

Go on lets see the website!
I have one myself that makes £200 a month at the moment - I would ideally like to get 5 or 6 each making £400 or so each then I could give up work!
As for houses I have been renting for years and have had all the "you must buy", "money down the drain" type questions but my response has always been I don't have the money for a deposit/fees.
Now I get the "You were probably right to wait". And again I have no money for deposit and fees so if houses crash I still couldn't buy!
So for me at the moment I couldn't care less if houses were 100,000 or 1,000,000 as either way I cannot buy at the moment!0 -
A big part of my decision to buy was taking advice from my older and wiser sister. I balanced this with my own research and knowledge though. On reflection, she really didn't have the depth of insight into the housing market that I have, and I took her advice based on her having been there and done that and 8 years longer than me on the planet. This time last year, I was getting my knickers in a twist about possible negative equity and price corrections, but she dismissed all of that as nonsense.
Someone else posted that their in-laws had offered to lend them the deposit money, hows about THIS for nausea inducing - Mr Phirefly's parents got a windfall and bought a pile of bricks in the middle of nothern France just before he and I went public. Mr. P's Mum one Christmas had a few too many sherries and confessed that had they known at the time that we were together (we'd been unofficially together for almost 2 years when the 'gite' was purchased) they'd have given us the money for a deposit.
Oh well. I'm actually relieved Hyacinth and Victor don't have a stake in our beloved wharf.0 -
Worse for me - we are being pressured by relatives (in-laws) to buy a house....with them!
Whilst we have agreed in principle to do this, despite huge reservations about buying now, we can't find anywhere suitable that we can afford. They can't understand this - their newspaper is 'full of houses'.
We have told them that we might have to continue renting for a while, either with them as well or getting them somewhere for 6 months nearby. We get all the usual 'renting is dead money' arguments etc. They have no idea about house buying and what it involves - they think it's like going to a shop for a TV.
I've managed to put this out of mind over Christmas, but the hassling phone calls have started again!0 -
You didn't tell your parents you had a boyfriend for two years?!
That said, doing it on your own is far more satisfying!Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. - Jefferson0 -
