Received speeding ticket but the name is wrongly spelt on the ticket
Hi
I received a speeding ticket and received a conditional offer of fine and 3 points. When I try to pay the fine, it kept saying that "there is a problem" When I checked the notice carefully I reaslised that there is a typo in my name on the notice. I have "mm" in my name and they spelt it with single "m". When I enter my name wrongly with only one "m" it goes through.
The question is is this penalty notice is still valid?
If I pay using my "wrong name" would the payment and the points be valid?
What should I be doing now? - Pay with wrong name? contest? Or contact them to correct my name?
Many thanks for your advice

AFAIK the COFP is valid, but others may disagree.
Is your name spelled correctly on both your licence and V5C?
When you pay, you have to provide your licence number so the correct licence will be endorsed.
Should you decide not to pay, you must contact them to put it right. Otherwise, it will end in court.

So are you saying that the name on the original NIP/s172 request was correct or are you saying that that was wrong also but you didn't notice?

Minor errors in the NIP are highly unlikely going to get you off, but you could risk getting a big uplift in the fine if you decide not to accept the offer and go to court instead.
Have you checked you VC5 to check that your details are correct there?

The offer of a fixed penalty is simply an offer to dispose of the matter without it going to court. You either accept it as it stands or you don't.
If you decline or ignore that offer (which is by far and away the best offer you will get) you will be prosecuted and when that happens, any mistakes or deficiencies in the fixed penalty offer are irrelevant.
In court any minor errors such as you mention can be easily amended.

"Have you checked you VC5 to check that your details are correct there?"
Is VC5 a Freudian slip in a thread about a spelling mistake (I won't bring up the other spelling mistake or tautology in that sentence)? 😄

Contact and correct name & take the 3 points would be my answer.

It's a funny one, if you decline the offer of a fixed penalty because it's "not you named on it" due to incorrect spelling, you can't then turn up in court later as the same thing applies, it's not you named.
If you do turn up in court and argue it's not you named on the FPN/summons, by turning up you've proved their case!

Yes. Name is correctly spelt everywhere. Mine is a lease car. So I believe, the police would have obtained my name from the leasing company. The error might have happened there.

Thanks everyone for the messages. I have now paid with my "incorrect name" on the notice. Will see what happens

Fifty plus years ago I was incorrectly summoned. I did however attend court as I did not find out about it a couple of days before. When the case was called I explained that they had got the wrong person, our names were similar spelling. The case could not proceed due to that - I was then asked if I could help the plaintiff to find the correct person which I did having had problems with it in the past and heard no more.
You do need to take care when names are spelt incorrect as they can come back and bite.
