Nationwide supports Click to Pay, and gives a clear explanation:

If you have set up Click to Pay and someone gains access to your computer, they can use Click to Pay to make online purchases. (It is the same risk as if you use Google or a browser to store passwords or passkeys.) With the old fashioned method, someone can make purchases if they have your card, but they will usually need access to your SIM to receive OTPs. (You will, of course, have a PIN on your SIM, and block notifications from you lock screen.) A small risk in both cases, provided that you take reasonable precautions.

No retailer (with any sense) will force you to use CtP, the conventional form-filling will still be available.

CtP is pretty well established in the US with a lot of the big online retailers supporting it.

Not so much in the UK, Debenhams, Just Eat & Holland & Barrett are probably the best known, but you might come across it more often when it is wholly accepted by the Payment Gateways like WorldPay, Stripe etc.

Interestingly, Amazon does not support Click to Pay. Amazon loves to have its sticky fingers on our card details. I always delete them after submitting an order with them, which happens about once a year.

Rather the point about CtP and retailers like Amazon, who "insist" that you store your card details with them before you can spend (even though many people like me and @GeoffTF choose to remove them toot sweet), why would they need to implement?

I guess that they might judge that any reduction in "payment friction" is a good thing - they already take the risk on not requiring the CVV code for stored cards just to make payment that bit less sticky.

A cynic would say that it is in Amazon's interest to make it easy for people to buy from them, but it is in its customers' interest to do the opposite. If they put obstacles in the way of spending their money, they are likely to retain more of it.
