Click to pay
I've just had an email from Barclays that they are introducing "Click to pay" and I will automatically be registered unless I opt out via the app (I don't have the app) or contact them.
I've not heard of click to pay before, I don't shop a huge amount online anyway, but I don't really understand how this works? To pay all I need to do is enter my email address, perhaps there is an obvious solution, but what's to stop anyone entering random or known email addresses to purchase things?

Click to pay is a faster online check out payment system. I see it as no difference to storing your card details in an app/web site. Depending on the vendor you may still receive a OTP.
As an example, I want to pay me mobile bill, so I log into my account, click the click to pay link and just enter my email. At present I chose a card, confirm the details etc etc. Although I haven’t used it, I assume it would be like any other transaction and my app will notify me instantly (bonus of having the app)
If you dont have the app you can opt out, remove or add a card using online banking.

That's not quite how it works, when you click on the 'Click to Pay' button it will still need you to respond to a OTC sent (typically) to your mobile. Your ID is set up on the device you are using for the purchase, albeit in tokenized form and that's what's sent to the retailer site. You'll be presented with the cards you have set up for CtP and can pick any of them for the purchase.
Only time you need to enter your (registered) email address or phone number is when using a new device (or when you clear cookies since that's where the ID token is held).
The point is to avoid you having to enter the card details for each purchase, or having to store those details locally and copy them to the screen. It's like having your card stored with each retailer that you do online business with.
Not just Barclays, being implemented across all card issuers as an initiative of the card payment networks (Visa, Mastercard, Amex etc).

Just remembered that there was a thread about Click to Pay back in April.
Must say I was particularly moany about it back then, at least now I know how it works!
Has anyone actually seen a 'Click to Pay' out in the wild, or does it only appear IF you have a signed up card and have the appropriate cookie set?

I have not signed up to it and was offered to pay with CTP in a London restaurant (Casa Do Frango), back in June. As I didn't know how it works, and the staff were unable to explain, I just paid with my Apple Watch, which is my preferred option. Still don't fully understand CTP, or whether it has benefits over paying with my watch.

Well my in-depth research into all things CtP says that whatever payment method the Casa offered you it wasn't Click to Pay - it's implemented as an online/web solution only.

It certainly was CTP. They came with their phone and wanted us to enter some details. We declined , as I said we didn't know how this was supposed to work, and they weren't able to explain. They then went away and came back with the familiar payment terminal that accepts contactless.

I have a real physical credit card and when I pay I tap it on the card machine and it makes a clicking noise perhaps that's what they mean by CTP?

Thanks all, it's been far better explained here than the Barclays email.
I think I'll opt out, for the amount of online shopping I do I can't see any real benefit to me at this time.

Well Visa thinks Click to Pay is for online payments
and so does Mastercard
https://www.mastercard.com/gb/en/personal/ways-to-pay/click-to-pay.html
but it seems you and Casa Do Frango think otherwise.
Struggling to see any advantage (to the customer or retailer) of not just presenting a card or eWallet device at a physical location.

The restaurant staff must have been confused. The CTP system has advantages for restaurants who take online orders but in a face to face context it’s adding unneeded complexity. Probably a new member of staff was presenting a payment method they were familiar with (it would have worked) rather than the one that made most sense.
