Carpets - sorry of this is a daft question

We are looking to replace carpets in 2 bedrooms. Would most fitters expect us as the customer to clear the room entirely for them beforehand? Or would they typically lift beds / bedside tables themselves as part of the installation process?

We're keen to have our old carpets replaced, but if we're expected to dismantle the beds ourselves, it seems like such a hassle! Thanks in advance.

If it's the odd bit of furniture then I wouldn't think it would be too much of a problem, but if it's an entire bedroom full of furniture then, personally, I would expect it to be cleared beforehand, they're carpet fitters, not removal men!

Ask them what state they want the room in, and get it agreed in writing before you sign on the dotted line.

They may be willing to do more moving than they normally expect if you agree to pay them extra, but don't wait until they arrive on the fitting day to conclude any negotiation. There will likely be something in their T&C's saying they can walk away (and charge you a wasted visit fee) if the room isn't as clear as it should be.

I've found local independent shops are more helpful with this. Might have to pay a bit extra or not.

Part depends on the room size. If the bed can be moved to allow half the room it's possible. Can you get the side tables out?

Another option is if you have a small removals firm in the area. Their guys might move it for a small sum.

On one occasion I asked a neighbour with several sons and they popped in to move a mattress for me. They aren't very aware of paintwork being of that age though but they did volunteer readily enough.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • “As part of our Delivery & Care package, the fitters are happy to move up to 5 pieces of empty furniture. Unfortunately, they won't be able to move plumbed or wired items, or really heavy items like pianos or pool tables. Please let us know if any items require two people to move them.”

Although, personally, I would always remove all furniture myself.

They're paid to fit carpets, not dismantle/move furniture. If you can't, or don't want to, do it yourself then there are plenty of odd job men who you can pay to do it for you.

To be brutally honest, you sound a bit entitled.

The local company we use, are happy to move furniture, beds etc. at no extra cost. Before they come we move all easy to move items, clutter etc. and remove some items from chest of drawers, wardrobes to make them less heavy. As another poster said an experienced fitter can do one half of the room, and then move items to the other half, before finishing off.

By the way I do not feel entitled by requesting this.

We had the same issue but moved out any furniture we could and left the bed. The fitters put down the carpet in half the room and then moved the bed onto it to finish.

It was all discussed beforehand though so I would speak to them and see.

It's been a while, but isn't it usual that the company you buy the carpet from will come and measure up the room(s) being fitted and then do the fitting?

Wouldn't you discuss the furniture in situ during the measuring?
