There is being sleepy due to lack of sleep through maybe sleep apnea, but there are also a number of neurological conditions such as narcolepsy and ME/chronic fatigue syndrome. My wife has CFS together with fibromyalgia and arthritis and falls asleep exactly as you describe with your partner (i wasn't asleep!) so might be worth investigating further.

He definitely does not have ME/CFS, I have had this for nearly 20 years, he was the one who told me I had it all those years ago(friend of his sister had it and my gp had a friend with it too), long story but I have been extremely lucky with my diagnosis and how to manage(went on a rehabilitation course, basically every medical person, physiotherapist, psychologist, relaxation etc, which was over a 6 week period, it was very new at the time) I have used what they taught me every single day since...but I can still drop off and still have the symptoms, it didn't work for everyone sadly.
As I explained he is waiting for the sleep clinic and just wanted to get people's thoughts, which are greatly appreciated.
It's very weird as he can walk for miles, but as soon as he stops, he's asleep and doesn't know it!
