A clarification on an earlier point; claims guys are not regulated by the FCA. So you do not have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service and there's no point talking to the FCA.

I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

They are however regulated by the SRA https://www.sra.org.uk/consumers/register/organisation/?sraNumber=642517 and so it would go to the Legal Ombudsman or the SRA themselves

It is common practice for a firm to want to ensure the person contacting them is the person they claim to be and not someone claiming to be the person. Checks are often things like DoB, Address etc. I suspect their request is simply a little lax, they can locate your account without your DoB but wont be willing to share any information from it without passing DPA checks such as your DoB. Back in my call centre days we couldnt even access someone's account with one firm until the DPA checks were completed, to access without it you had to get a manager across to grant you access and they would stay with you until you were back out of the account to ensure you didnt do anything to the account or tell the caller anything you shouldnt having not properly IDed them.

So technically they should probably say we need this information to locate your account and give you the information but I assume they think the second part is implicit as there is no point in them finding your account and then saying you need to pass DPA checks else they cant tell you anything.
