I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, not common for a bloke, and I didn't even know I had the condition as my symptoms were not typical and were only proven by a general blood test. Within a fortnight of being issued the first prescription I had the exemption cert.
Occasionally a thyroid can improve - usually when someone has had an under active thyroid due to pregnancy.
Normally though it's for life.0 -

I have afriend who was prescribed thyroxine... her GP told her that she has to be on the medication long term, or for life before she could have a exemption cert... Apparently she may not need them for life, maybe just short term. I will tell her to ask again at her surgery to see what her doctor says this time. I too understood that once you where on thyroxine, you were exempt, and was surprised whan she told me what her GP had said.0 -

Must admit the doctor never told me about being exempt either, even though I was severely hypo - he mentioned my results were a practice record.
The chemist gave me the form to fill out on my first prescription & I got the doctor to sign it.0
