Bought a faulty van

Sorry, water pump motors, things that pump water around the engine. It needs two apparently. But the problem with the pressure etc is the head gasket not the water pump bit. They got it wrong when they did a quick look, it was only when I asked them to do the work that they found out what was really wrong.

I'll add this info to the first post, but the van is currently in the garage's yard, I can't do anything with it as it has no MOT. So I need to sort something out quickly before they get sick of keeping it.

It sounds like what you would buy at auction like @ Copart, they deliver on a trailer and the descriptions are not always accurate. £3,500 would be a good buy for a running van with MOT, but this has no MOT?
If it was sold without MOT, that wouldn't be retail?

It wasn't at auction, but for obvious reasons I'd rather not name the company.
It had an MOT when I bought it, but when it was due to be done again I took it in and they found the head gasket problem. I hadn't driven it in between the two trips to the garage because I'd had to take a loan out (personal loan, not secured against the vehicle, no recourse there) and needed to save up for the work that had originally been quoted. Plus I'd been trying to get in touch with the seller but they ignored all my emails. I didn't want to phone because I wanted a paper trail.

Have you tried the way back machine to see if there is a record of what the page said when you purchased the van?

A high mileage van at the end of its life for little money.
You don't stand a chance of getting your money back.
On a side note, find a new garage. If they're quick to quote you £800 for a washer motor and miss a head gasket fault they can't be any good.

MOT has nothing to do with engine. All it does is say car is roadworthy at point of test.
So did you ask garage to look at any other issues, when taking for MOT?

Sadly doesn't seem to be there, nor the auto trader or eBay adverts.

It wasn't a washer motor, I used the wrong words.
I took it in because of all the warning lights on the dash and because I'd had to bump start it.
They hooked it up to the computer which said it was the water pump motors that needed replacing.
When I took it back for that to be done and they looked further, they realised it was the head gasket.

Yes.
I bought it and they couldn't start it when they delivered it, but got it going.
I tried to drive it the next day and it had to be bump started. So I took it to the garage.
Their computer said that it needed new water pump things.
I took it back to get those done, and the MOT as it was due, and that's when they found that the underlying cause was the head gasket.
