Why is it so expensive to keep your number with Sky Mobile?

Having been in a similar position myself I have to say this:

If you want to stay with Sky Mobile but 'improve' your data plan allowance, you're going to have to call them (as I don't believe chat can do it, as far as I'm aware). Yes it'll be painful and it'll take some time, but it's doable. Maybe just as well really as their prices are all over the place (e.g. unlimited - £29 for existing customers, £18 for new customers, £15 for VIP customers. Also, VIP offering both 3GB and 10GB for £5pm).

Anyway, last time I tried it (this is going back a bit) I beat them down, in a fashion, to 40GB for £11.25 a month (standard price was £20pm or so at the time if memory serves). Might have done better, but at that point I was past caring and accepted it to get off the phone. Ever since then I've ported out and back in when necessary as it saves time if nothing else.

No, I've not had Sky Mobile for 3 or 4 years (moved to O2 and then to Lebara). I do have Sky Q and am back on Sky BB now.

Ah - the 40GB mentioned was on an existing SIM.

As for the £10 unlimited for Diamond, yes, but that would be on a new SIM and you'd need to be a Diamond customer too.

Forgot this earlier - porting out and back in means I have a SIM for £14.50 with unlimited on Sky, and that's as Silver and with no headache from the Sky contact centre, so, overall, for my experience I'd say don't be shy when dealing with Sky.

There is no point in loyalty to any network. You can ditch and switch so easily. Also there is no point in being tied to a 12 or 24 month contract with the annoying annual increases either.

Most of us can get plenty of data for £10, or less, per month on a 30 day rolling "non contract" SIM.

If you need to roam in Europe, check the included roaming allowance is sufficient. For example on GiffGaff you only get 5GB. Another point with regard to roaming is whether you need Isle of Man and Channel Is roaming, not all include that for free.

If you can get a plan for £5, then I would do that and use up the data in your piggybank (as you have already paid for it) before ditching Sky for another network. After a period of time you would presumably qualify as a new customer again, although keep an eye on how much data you are accumulating as it sounds like you have been adding too much to your piggybank via being on too high a plan for a while. Piggybank should allow you to get a plan that might be tight at times, via allowing you to use data stored away in months you used less.

You can achieve the same effect as "piggy banking" by simply not buying more data than you need every month! You don't buy excess food in the supermarket so you can bank some for a big party you're planning, you just buy more when you're having the party. Why do people think they need to have a contract giving them the same amount every month? Use PAYG and buy what you need when you need it.

Eg I use 1pmobile, most months I just use 1/3GB or so, costing under £5 on average a month, but if I'm going on holiday etc I'll a bigger boost costing maybe £2 or so more. When our broadband was down and I wanted to switch anyway so were without any broadband for a few weeks, I bought a massive boost of 100GB for £15 and that was enough for a few weeks.

I thought with 1p you selected say 5GB for £5 and it kept rolling over automatically. How do you swap and change each month?

You just get a SIM on their "classic" PAYG tariff then you buy boosts whenever you need them. You just need to untick the auto renew option when buying the boost. They email when it's about to run out so you can then decide to buy a new one, whatever amount you think you need, or you can stay on PAYG for a while if you're not going to use it much.

Or if you usually use say 5GB you can get 5GB on auto renew and if you need more in any month you can buy an additional boost, or you could cancel the auto-renew and buy a bigger one when the current one runs out.
