Mobility scooter

Hi All.

My dad bought a mobility scooter for £3000. This was made up of £2500 payment, and £500 part exchange of his older scooter.

He bought it on July 26th. Sadly, though, he died before he could use it. He has been hospitalised for 6 weeks and we hoped he would get better. But, he didn't.

Today I called the company he bought the scooter from, to see what options there were. They said there were none as the 14 day return policy had expired.

My dad used the scooter once - a test drive so to speak.

What options are available to us, if any?

There is no consumer rights here. If the retailer isn't willing to accept a return, then selling it privately is your only avenue.

The only option you have is to sell it privately. There must be a second hand market as they took his old one in p.ex so have you asked if they will buy it ?

Thanks - I suspected it was the case.

    Sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately this sort of thing must happen all the time. If it's not literally a quick death as in this case, it'll be the thing gets used once or twice in the first month and then sits in the garage because the user never remembers to charge it in advance of when it's needed.

The good news is there is definitely a second hand market, although you'll probably take a hit on the price. I got my mum a well-loved one for about £400, but I saw plenty on gumtree and FB in better condition for 3-4 times that.

    Sorry for your loss.

My OH talked his mom into getting a mobility scooter but as someone who had never driven a car and hadn't had a bicycle in maybe 60 years she didn't get on with it. As I recall it cost her about £2k. Always hopeful that she might decide to try it again it was kept for a couple of years but eventually it was sold to someone my OH found on facebook or gumtree - he did scooter refurbs and bought it for £250. Hopefully you will get more but don't hold out too much hope for recooping near the full purchase price.

Thanks for the kind words, I am completely broken hearted.

Yes, I fear the 2nd hand market will drive the value down. It would be hard to prove it is, essentially, brand new. I think the key point is that there is nothing available to us other than to sell privately.

Thanks for your kind words. I think it may be gumtree for us. I am going to call a few companies tomorrow, just in case.

    Sorry for the loss.

I don't get why people pay these high prices. You can get good scooters for under £1K (Care Co & others).
