By not keeping in contact with the host you have lost any grounds for a refund. You could at least have told them that due to access difficulties you were seeking somewhere else

It could have been that the lift was repaired on the second or third day of your stay but you had already gone ahead and booked a full weeks alternative accommodation.

Or next time, just ask here for advice in the first place.

The host already had his revenue from me..so a refund minus the price of a one night stay would have been easy enough to deliver i would have thought?

Why would they refund you, when as far as they know you were there all week. They only have your word that you only stayed one night.

  • Yes, you are clearly old fashioned.

The general principle is to not go looking for problems that don't exist. If someone states "the lift is out of order" then you apologise and get someone to fix the lift. You don't assume that as a direct consequence the person stayed in the property for one night out of five and offer them a refund. It's a common courtesy to ask for what you want rather than making an assumption that the other side can read your mind and know what you're thinking.

Because A/ Their own cctv would let them know that i did not stay in the building

B/ i supplied proof of my new accommodation booking to both the host and Airbnb… i also explained to that new accommodation my situation and gave my consent that they could could confirm my booking details in the event of any enquiries.

    Update:

Being old fashioned clearly has its merits.

I never felt ENTITLED to a refund… i only ever asked for advice on being out of pocket for something that wasn't my fault.

Even though my host refused a refund, Airbnb, on asking for more clarification, have agreed to refund my money, minus the one night i stayed.

They agreed good practice should have seen the host offer an alternative place when i mentioned the lift problem.

"because a lift only has one function and it clearly wasnt fit for purpose to take you to the 6th floor,so the host should have reasonably assumed the stairs were not an option , therefore making the apartment inaccessible, or at the very least clarified this with you"

    Just a quick update.

    Airbnb asked for more clarification.

They then proceeded to give me a full refund, minus the one night i stayed.

They stated good practice should have seen the host offer me alternative accommodation when i first mentioned the broken lift , because a lift only has one function and bringing it to his attention he should have resonably assumed the stairs were not an option for me..or at the very least, as a good host he should have at least messaged to clarify how big a problem it was.

So, a bit like yourself, Airbnb has surprised me!

    All's well that ends well.

Was that at the point you moved out?

Also CCTV should not be viewed while you are staying.. Breach of privacy.

It's also a tad unrealistic to expect your host to trawl through several days' CCTV to check the movements of their guests…

  • I'm at a loss as to why the OP thinks the host should have known they didn't stay when they didn't inform them? Going back through CCTV is irrelevant, the host can't relet the property for a period that has now happened. If the OP informed them they could have recouped some of the money, I think the OP is completely missing this part.
