We are on a water meter. There are just two of us in a three bedroom house.

We noticed how much water we wasted when running the hot tap, before it had heated the water to wash up, to shower, etc. It was quite a substantial amount.

When we use the hot water, we run the cold water into a water container. We use it to flush the toilet or to water plants.

I admit, it is a bit of a pain but don't want to waste water or our money going down the drain.

    Keep on trucking!

I saw a suggestion somewhere that a car oil drain pan works well for catching water. We lose a lot while waiting for the water to heat up. What can we use it for?

We have a plastic jug that we catch the shower water in when waiting for the shower to heat up. Use that for rinsing the shower cubicle out after showering, and for the toilet. We have a bowl next to the kitchen sink which I collect the water from the hot tap when waiting for that to heat up as well. Put that in a watering can for the garden.

We were on rateable value when we moved into this house 2 years ago. This year it would have been around £100+ a month over 12 months. We went onto a deemed rate whilst waiting for the meter to be fitted. 2 people in a 4 bed semi would have been £60 a month. Since going onto the meter we have been paying £54 a month which is covering the cost.

The rateable value amounts tend to be higher if you have a larger garden, but generally, less people than bedrooms you are usually better off on a meter. 1 unit of water is 1,000 litres of water. We are with Yorkshire water and their billing system is pretty woeful tbh, still no idea how much we actually use , the meter is pretty inaccessible unless you are a contortionist and they've never been out to read the meter either.

I just get under it and use the cold water at the beginning of the shower to wake myself up in a morning.
