Plus the low pay commission who set it have a remit to raise it to 2/3 average salary. Which it pretty much is now, so won't be getting the sort of big rises it got in the past

The new state pension isn't much higher than the old one though. It's higher than the basic state pensions but the old system had SERPS/S2P/contracted out pension on top as well

Article from 2025 about "Retirees on £36K state pensions".

There are anomalies between the pre 2010, pre 2016 and post 2016 pensions. There also could be considered a degree of "unfairness" in any one of the three compared to another dependant on the personal circumstances.

Interestingly, the Telegraph ran a very similar article in 2024:
In 2024 there were ~9.3M "old" state pensioners. In 2025, there were 8.4M, a decrease of ~900k. That seems quite a large drop considering that the UK only records ~600k deaths a year. Are there ~300k pensioners dying overseas each year? Or am I missing something obvious here?

The numbers of pre 2016 pensioners still alive has been gradually reducing as you would expect. You'd have to look at stat explore if you really wanted to know the numbers.
At August 2025 the average new state pension was about £7 per week less than the average old state pension for males but the average new state pension was about £20 per week more than the average old state pension for females

There are also many that don't get anywhere near that, for example my weekly amount of old BSP is £229.36 with all the bits of Serps etc. added versus the full weekly amount on NSP of £241.30, thus nearly £12 a week less. A small company pension takes me over the Pension Credit threshold so no additional help there.
I suspect this is the reality for many more on the old BSP, especially women, than those that grab headlines by getting £20k/36k or similar figures.

But many of those old scheme women could end up being way better off than new pensioners when they become widowed and no longer have their husband to support them, giving them the new pension amount would have to come with removing that boost which could leave them worse off. As far as the actual pension amount is concerned women, especially "career housewives", are one of the winners under the new arrangements which I believe was one of the objectives and as I said in my earlier post, anomalies and perceived unfairness under all three schemes.

In S2P you could get NI credits towards the additional state pension as well as basic through claiming child ben for a child under 6 IIRC (or may have been 12). And the credits were based on earning the LET (low earnings threshold NOT to be confused with the LEL) which was around £16k in 2016 IIRC, about £22k now, and the replacement rate was 40% for earnings in the LEL-LET band, double the usual 20% in SERPS. So even housewives could accrue a pension better than the NSP.

Was your company pension contracted out of SERPS/S2P? If so some of it is effectively state pension replacement
