My kitten is about 4months old now, and has been using a litter tray with the flap since I got her at 10weeks. She needed to be showed how to do it, and at certain points throughout the day, I pushed her through, she got the hang of it in no time, so i'm sure your kitten would manage fine, but just so you know it DOSENT contain the smell really, you get these deodarisers for the top of it, but the ones Ive been getting dont work and just smell like cat keck within a day. OUST sprayed liberally is the best option lol

Unfortunately cats can't be trained in the same way as dogs ' putting her nose up to it and shouting' just won't work with a cat, its ok to tell her off if you catch her in the act (a firm no! or naughty!) , but only then other wise the cat won't understand why your telling it off, even if the evidence is right in front of its nose.
That doesn't work for dogs either! It's a very old and cruel method of training, that is more likely to teach the dog never to go in front of you, and which thankfully has been replaced by positive training methds, like taking the pup/dog outside regularly (ie giving it plenty of opportunity to do the right thing) and praising the dog when it does go outside. :) Sorry to go OT, but I can't bear the thought of people training the dogs (or any other animal) this way. :)

Both dogs & cats (and horses and humans, I could go on!) learn best through positive association. You could try clicker training - have a look at this article and video of a truly 'toilet trained' cat! :)

I think that like other posters, at least temporarily you'll need to put another litter tray downstairs too.

    Hi all

A lovely question first thing in the morning , but here goes....

I have a new kitten (pic as my avatar) She sleeps upstairs in the bathroom at night where her litter tray is, so the two boys can't hurt her when we are not looking.

sorry but when you mean boys do you mean children boys or other cat boys?

if you mean cat boys then perhaps the reason shes messing other places other than the litter tray is becuase one of the others may have used the tray and shes putting her scent down elsewhere to get over it.

if you mean children boys then i think you should sit your lads down and have a chat to them as they may have hurt her and again thats why shes messing elsewhere.

I also wouldnt put the litter tray in the bathroom one thing its disgusting and another if you are moving the litter tray about shes goona get even more confused as where the blooming thing is.

kittens do take alot of time to settle in and if you anxious then they will feel it too.
