Might be worth looking at what Tesco offer because you can see just how big they really are. Ditto some second hand phone whoops for the same reason.
Seeing them for real can make what you need clearer for you then you can search online. If you find something you think might be suitable in store you could take elderly relative to give them a go.

I recently bought an Ufferson T180 from Amazon
It seemed better value than a Doro and was 4G compatible. It comes with an easy charging base.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
samsung smartphone have easy mode. worth a look.
If he is at home, any mobile phone could connect to bluetooth keyboard which allow him to type text.
A tablet with Whatsapp could be an alternative option of SMS.
